Bitcoin advocate and Twitter’s co-founder Jack Dorsey’s non-profit organization, ₿trust, is making strides in its mission to amplify the development and education of open-source Bitcoin engineers, particularly in the Global South. This effort has recently been bolstered by the acquisition of Qala, a firm dedicated to educating African Bitcoin and Lightning engineers.
Qala’s Integration into ₿trust
As a result of the acquisition, which took place on September 1st, Qala will undergo a rebranding process and will now be known as the ₿trust Builders Programme. Since its inception in 2021, Qala has been actively involved in recruiting, training, and connecting African software developers with international Bitcoin companies. This has enabled them to acquire crucial skills within the global Bitcoin ecosystem.
The Impact of the Acquisition
The scaling programs Africa acquisition is poised to enhance ₿trust’s ability to fulfill its mission. Qala’s robust online community, which spans across 42 countries including Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda, has proven to be a valuable asset. Many of the program’s graduates have secured positions at Bitcoin-native banking platform Galoy, Lightning Network-based messenger SphinxChat, and peer-to-peer platform Bitnob, among others.
Leadership Changes and Future Prospects
Under the terms of the acquisition, Qala CEO Femi Longe and program manager Stephanie Titcombe will join ₿trust as program leads. This move has been welcomed by ₿trust board member Ojoma Ochai, who has expressed pride in the rapid progress Qala has made in driving open-source development in the Global South.
