In a groundbreaking move, Brazil’s government recently declared its plans to utilize blockchain-based digital ID for over 214 million of its citizens. This initiative, which will leverage blockchain technology for issuing identification documents, will first be implemented in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Goiás, and Paraná.

Revolutionizing Identification with Blockchain

A private blockchain, developed by Brazil’s national data processing service, Serpro, will power the issuance of these identification documents. The entire country is expected to transition to this blockchain technology for issuing identity documents by November 6, according to a decree issued on September 25.

President of Serpro, Alexandre Amorim, highlighted the potential of blockchain technology in this digital identification project. He stated, “Blockchain technology plays a critical role in protecting personal data and preventing fraud, offering a more secure digital experience for Brazilian citizens. Utilizing the b-Cadastros blockchain platform significantly enhances the security and reliability of the National Identity Card project.”

Addressing Organized Crime and Streamlining Services

The local government has stated that this national ID project is crucial in targeting organized crime. Moreover, it will enable different government sectors to collaborate more effectively, thereby simplifying access to services and streamlining administrative records.

Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires, has also revealed a similar initiative that allows residents to access identity documents via a digital wallet. Over the past few years, Brazil has been striving to unify identity issuance across its nearly 30 states. The newly adopted blockchain technology will facilitate a more secure data exchange between the Federal Revenue and government departments, as per the announcement.

Central Bank Digital Currency on the Horizon

Besides the blockchain-based digital ID initiative, another significant development brewing in Brazil is the introduction of a central bank digital currency (CBDC). The government divulged more details about this project in August, rebranding the digital currency to Drex. Reports suggest that the central bank plans to broaden business access to capital through a tokenization system associated with Drex. Local developers have discovered that the Drex code allows a central authority to freeze funds or reduce balances.
