In an intriguing turn of events, a Bitcoin (BTC) wallet that has been inactive since 2010, holding 1,005 BTC, has recently shown signs of activity. The anonymous owner of this wallet has begun transferring the once dormant coins to fresh addresses through a series of transactions.

The Spark of the Bitcoin Awakening

Blockchain expert, developer, and cryptocurrency trader, Kirill Kretov, was the first to spot this Bitcoin awakening. He shared his insights on the matter with Cointelegraph. The details of the wallet and its activity were later independently verified using blockchain data from Blockchair.

As per the wallet statement, the 1,005 BTC it contained was valued at a mere $328 when initially received in 2010. At present, the same amount of BTC is worth over $29 million, reflecting the enormous growth of Bitcoin’s value over the years.

Speculations Surrounding the Activity

This sudden movement of the long-dormant Bitcoin has sparked discussions among the wider cryptocurrency community. Some enthusiasts have even speculated whether Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin, might be behind the activity.

However, Kretov believes that the movement of these virgin BTC is not the work of Bitcoin’s creator, but rather a long-term holder or an entity associated with previous Bitcoin awakenings. He further suggested that the holder might be selling Bitcoin in an over-the-counter transaction.

Previous Instances of Bitcoin Awakenings

Kretov’s research archives, which keep track of numerous virgin Bitcoin wallets from the years following Bitcoin’s inception, have recorded only three other instances of Bitcoin awakenings involving 1,000 BTC or more. This includes one instance where 100 BTC from two wallets mined in 2011 were moved in December 2021.

There was also an instance in April 2023, where 1,000 BTC mined in 2011 was transferred from a single wallet. Then in July 2023, 1,037 BTC from a wallet dating back to 2012 was moved.

Interestingly, the present Bitcoin awakening closely resembles 13 instances in which Bitcoin was moved from wallets containing 50 BTC each between 2020 and 2021.
