As the world of digital currencies becomes increasingly complex, a new threat has emerged that is impacting the security of crypto users. This threat, known as “Wallet Drainers”, is a type of malware that is making significant strides in the realm of cybercrime. Over the past year, this malicious software has managed to drain over $295 million from the wallets of around 324,000 crypto users, according to a recent report by Scam Sniffer.

Understanding the Threat of Wallet Drainers

Wallet Drainers are deployed on phishing websites, designed to trick users into authorizing harmful transactions. This leads to the theft of assets from the users’ crypto wallets. This form of malware has proven particularly effective, with a single day in March seeing nearly $7 million stolen due to fluctuations in USDC rates. Victims were lured to phishing sites impersonating Circle, a popular crypto platform.

Another surge in thefts occurred when Arbitrum’s Discord was compromised, coinciding with their airdrop date. Scam Sniffer noted that these peaks in theft often strategically align with group-related events, such as airdrops or hacking incidents.

The Evolution of Phishing Activities

As phishing activities crypto users face continue to evolve, new entities have emerged to replace those that have been exposed and shut down. For example, after Monkey Drainer was revealed by ZachXBT and subsequently shut down, Venom took over a significant portion of its clientele. When Venom ceased operations, other phishing groups quickly moved to fill the void.

The pace and scale of these activities have increased dramatically. Monkey drained $16 million over six months, while Inferno Drainer managed to loot $81 million in just nine months. Based on a 20% Drainer fee, these entities made at least $47 million from the sale of wallet drainer services.

Strategies Used by Phishing Sites

Phishing sites attract visitors through various means. These include hacking attacks where official project Discord and Twitter accounts are breached, distribution of NFT or Token airdrops, and paid advertising such as Google search ads and Twitter ads. While hacking attacks have a broad impact, the community typically responds quickly, often within 10-50 minutes. However, airdrops, organic traffic, paid advertising, and takeover of Discord links are considerably less noticeable.

As phishing activities continue to grow, it’s essential for crypto users to stay vigilant and protect their assets. One way to do this is by using secure platforms like cryptoview.io to manage and monitor their crypto portfolios.
