In spite of experiencing a significant drop in market share and monthly trading volume, Binance Retains Top Spot as the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange. This is according to a recent market research report compiled by CoinGecko, a leading crypto analytics platform.
A Closer Look at Binance’s Performance
Although Binance saw a 19% reduction in its market share and a 49% decrease in its monthly trading volume since the start of 2023, it has managed to stay on top. As of June 2023, Binance’s market share stood at 51.7%. Furthermore, despite a decrease from $466 billion in January to $217.6 billion in February, the crypto giant still reported a substantial spot trading volume.
Notably, the highest trading volume for the year was recorded in March 2023, with Binance users trading a staggering $559.8 billion worth of cryptocurrency assets.
Performance of Other Key Players
In the race for dominance, South Korea’s Upbit and OKX emerged as the second and third largest crypto exchanges by market share, respectively. Upbit had a market share of 8.1% and a spot trading volume of $36.8 billion as of June 2023, despite a 13% decline since January 2023. However, it saw a significant increase from its yearly low of $24.1 billion in May 2023.
OKX, on the other hand, has been one of the few exchanges to increase its market share year-to-date, from 5.11% in January to 7% in June. Nonetheless, its trading volume took a considerable hit, losing more than $6 billion since the start of the year.
New Entrants and Displaced Exchanges
Among the next in line were Coinbase, Bybit, and Kucoin, with market shares of 6.5%, 5.4%, and 4.9%, respectively. Intriguingly, Bybit and Bitget broke into the top ten list of crypto exchanges for the first time this year, displacing renowned exchanges Crypto.com and Huobi Global.
