Despite experiencing a significant drop in volume, ordinals continue to play a major role in the world of Bitcoin (BTC) transactions. This is a remarkable scenario where ordinals, a mechanism that allows users to attach digital assets like videos and images to individual units of BTC (satoshi), are holding their ground in the Bitcoin network. This process effectively creates non-fungible tokens (NFTs) within the Bitcoin ecosystem.

Statistical Snapshot of Ordinal Dominance

Data from Dune Analytics reveals that on August 21, there were 411,511 ordinal inscriptions on the Bitcoin network within a 24-hour window. BitInfoCharts recorded 567,794 Bitcoin transactions during the same period, indicating that approximately 72% of all Bitcoin activity is presently linked to ordinals. These numbers affirm the dominance of ordinals despite large volume decline.

Leonidas, a pseudonymous ordinal developer, pointed out that at one stage, the emerging ecosystem was accountable for 85% of all Bitcoin activity. He refuted claims of the death of ordinals, stating that they accounted for 84.9% of Bitcoin activity in the past 24 hours, which amounted to 450,785 out of 530,788 transactions.

The Impact of Market Downturn

Interestingly, the influence of ordinals remains intact even amid a significant market downturn and volume drop. CryptoSlam, a blockchain analytics platform, reported a 54% decrease in ordinal sales over the past month. Moreover, the volume has yet to surpass the record high set in May.

Introduction of BRC-20

The Bitcoin ecosystem is also witnessing the emergence of BRC-20, an experimental token standard crafted by a pseudonymous developer named Domo. Inspired by Ethereum’s ERC-20, BRC-20 utilizes ordinals to mint, deploy, and transfer tokens. Although it borrows from the ERC-20 model, BRC-20 is unique due to the distinctive architecture of Bitcoin’s blockchain.

Domo described the creation as a fun experimental standard demonstrating the potential of creating off-chain balance states with inscriptions. He also advised the Bitcoin community to experiment with standard designs and optimizations until a consensus on best practices is reached.
