On August 18, two separate incidents shook the world of decentralized finance, or DeFi, as Exactly and Harbor, two prominent DeFi protocols, fell victim to malicious attacks. The incidents, while not linked, underscore the growing concerns around blockchain security and the vulnerability of DeFi protocols to attacks and asset theft.

Details of the Exactly Protocol Attack

Blockchain security firms DeDotFi and PeckShield reported that Exactly Protocol had been exploited, resulting in the theft of 4323.6 Ether (ETH), equivalent to approximately $7.3 million at the time. The attackers then bridged 1490 ETH using the Across Protocol, and 2,832.92 ETH to the Ethereum network via Optimism Bridge.

Initially, reports suggested that over 7160 ETH, valued at nearly $12 million, had been stolen. However, these figures were later revised down. The attacker targeted the DebtManager periphery contract, managing to bypass the permit check and execute a malicious deposit function to siphon off user assets.

The Harbor Attack

Harbor, an interchain stablecoin protocol, also disclosed that it had been the victim of an attack that resulted in the loss of funds from its stable-mint, stOSMO, LUNA, and WMATIC vaults. The total amount of stolen crypto assets remains unknown. Harbor is currently tracing funds and estimating the total losses.

Increasing Security Incidents in DeFi

These attacks are part of a growing trend of security incidents in the DeFi ecosystem. On July 30, a vulnerability in three versions of the Vyper programming language led to the theft of over $61 million from stable pools on Curve Finance. Other compromised protocols include Earn.Finance, which suffered a loss of at least $287,000 worth of ETH, and Zunami Protocol, which incurred losses of $2.1 million due to an exploit.

These events highlight the need for constant vigilance in the DeFi space. Platforms like cryptoview.io offer an easy-to-use interface to monitor your crypto assets and stay informed about the latest developments in the blockchain and DeFi world.
