For the first time in half a year, Optimism has overtaken Arbitrum in transaction volume, a noteworthy shift in the world of Ethereum layer 2 networks. This change, reported on July 27 by blockchain analytics platform Artemis, showcases the dynamic nature of these competing networks, both of which employ optimistic rollup technology to streamline transactions and potentially reduce fees.

Optimism’s Rise, Fall, and Comeback

Optimism’s journey has been a rollercoaster. In January, it slipped behind Arbitrum in terms of volume, coinciding with the end of the first season of its “quest” feature. However, as Worldcoin made its debut on July 25, Optimism regained its leading position. From August to December 2022, both networks experienced comparable Optimism transaction volumes, with Optimism briefly pulling ahead in December before falling back again in January.

The Impact of the Bedrock Upgrade

In June, Optimism rolled out its Bedrock upgrade, aimed at reducing transaction fees. This move resulted in a 67% spike in transaction volume. Despite this impressive surge, it was not enough to surpass Arbitrum, according to Artemis data.

Worldcoin’s Launch and its Effects

Between July 23 and 26, Optimism’s transactions escalated even further, jumping from 490,500 to 809,070 – a nearly 65% increase. This pushed Optimism back to the top spot among the two networks. Notably, this significant increase coincided with the launch of Worldcoin on Optimism, suggesting a strong correlation.

The recent surge in Optimism’s activity might also be attributed to the anticipated launch of Coinbase’s Base network, which developers claim will be linked to Optimism as part of an upcoming “Superchain”. However, while Optimism may be leading in transaction volumes, it lags behind Arbitrum in total value locked (TVL) – the capital deposited into its contracts. Blockchain analytics platform DefiLlama reports that Optimism has a TVL of just $923 million, while Arbitrum boasts a TVL exceeding $2 billion.
