What’s the real influence of Bitcoin halving on BTC price? This question sparks curiosity among both seasoned and newbie Bitcoin investors. A recent discussion at the Swan Pacific Bitcoin festival titled, “Are halving price cycles a myth?” explored this topic. The host, Nik Bhatia, founder of Bitcoin Layer, invited Fred Thiel, CEO of Marathon Digital, Ralph Zagury, Swan CIO, and Andy Edstrom, Swan product manager, to share their views.

The Bitcoin Halving Debate

The traditional view among cryptocurrency enthusiasts is that Bitcoin halving events – where the number of Bitcoins generated by miners is cut by half – usually precede a significant increase in BTC price. However, this notion was debated in the panel discussion. While all panelists agreed that halving may have some effect on the market, they also agreed that its influence could be decreasing over time.

Is Liquidity the Real Driver?

When asked whether halving is the primary driver of Bitcoin price, Thiel responded, “In this cycle, no, I think it’s liquidity”. Zagury concurred, noting that market flow has more impact on price than halving. However, Edstrom presented a contrasting view, stating that halving still influences price, albeit the extent of this effect can be debated.

Bitcoin Price and the Role of Derivatives

Bhatia further inquired about the role of derivatives in Bitcoin’s price discovery. According to Zagury, the data points for halving are insufficient to draw any definitive conclusions. He further added that most of the time, Bitcoin’s price either moves sideways or downwards, making it difficult for investors to hold on to their positions for long periods.

Despite the differing views on the influence of Bitcoin halving for BTC price, all panelists expressed optimism for the long-term value of Bitcoin, agreeing that liquidity will be a key factor in future price movements. Zagury stated, “I’m very bullish. I think we are going to see that soon, because liquidity has been drawing down and we see that these things are starting to happen and it’s not going to take a lot for us to see a very big move.”
